Not too much to comment on. Haven't seen any of the matches. The most disappointing has probably been Jurgen losing in the first round in Delray but when I woke up this morning...I saw that Tipsy & Mischa made it to the QFs of Dubai so it all balances out.

Memphis Belongs to Melzer
So excited for Jurgen!!! Not only did he have to defeat three seeds to win the Title but he won the tournament playing with a broken toe!!! By far, this was Jurgen's week. I was a little worried the match might go 3 sets but he kept his focus (not always a strong point of his) and was the better player on all levels.

Wrap-up - Marseille & Buenos Aires
The most frustrating thing about the Marseille SF was to learn that Tipsy had 6 set points in that tiebreak.
As for the Final in Buenos Aires? I expected nothing less than 3 sets. Missed a lot of the 3rd set due to a bad feed but it came back in time to see the last two games. Nothing special...Ferrer just got it done and his 9th win over Almagro.

Day of "David" in Buenos Aires
It was day of "David" in Buenos Aires.
I didn't think that Gonzo would beat Ferrer but I did have hopes that he could push him to 3. Wasn't meant to be...Gonzo played a good match but when the rallies got long, more often than not, the point would go to Ferrer. Ferrer just had more gas in the tank...like he does against almost everybody. I wish the Nalbandian vs Ferrer match could be a Final and not a SF.
Saw a little bit of Tipsy's match and he's definitely playing at the level that he could beat Llodra tomorrow. Straight sets.

R16 Roundup - Marseille & Buenos Aires
I will get around to posting about Memphis soon. Memphis has suffered the same fate as SJ last week when it comes to posting.
The best thing to come out of yesterday was that Gonzo made the QFs!!! And today...Nalbandian has made the QFs!
Have to drop a mention of the name Albano Olivetti. A Qualifier who upset Mardy Fish in Marseille today. Pretty impressive!

Update - Dubai & Monterrey
A bit of a side note, I'm happy to see that after beating Dokic on Monday...Cadantu has made it to the QFs and she'll face #8 Lourdes Dominguez Lino. I always feel better when someone who beats a favorite goes far in the tourney.
Also, Paola & Gisela won their first match together...which Gisela then went on to dedicate the win to the victims of the tragedy in Argentina when a train ran into the station killing many.

Roundup of R32 - Marseille & Buenos Aires
Its a frustrating thing to be a fan of Juan Carlos Ferrero these days. I've wanted to write that since yesterday but time didn't allow for a blog entry. I was lucky enough to find a live feed of his match against Nishikori. Its just so difficult to watch him have moments of the player he was 5-10 years ago but just not enough of those moments...have to wonder how much longer Ferrero will be playing. Arnaud Clement and Fernando Gonzalez are each making this year their last. Might be Tommy Haas's last year. Just wonder if Ferrero is right there.
And a retirement is always sad to end a match but I can't deny a sigh of relief that Montanes retired against Gonzo.
As for today, Karol Beck won his match against Mathieu in Marseille!!! That makes me so happy for this guy. He needs a break.

Monday Schedule - Marseille & Buenos Aires
Arnaud Clement has been given a WC into Marseille. I was hoping that I was going to be able to write an entry about NoNo winning the Bergamo Challenger but it wasn't meant to be when he lost in the SFs.
The top 4 seeds in Marseille get BYEs: Tsonga, Fish, Tipsarevic, and Del Potro.

Update - Rotterdam & Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo went so late yesterday that I wasn't able to come here and post anything about it. I was able to catch a live feed of Nalbandian vs Simon and Nalbandian pretty much dominated that match. Unfortunately, same didn't apply today when he faced Volandri. I missed the first set and a half but was watching when Nalbandian came back from 0-40 and a couple Deuces to hold. Only then to lose his next service game after being up 40-15 and saving one BP. Gave the break to Volandri and that was that. I'm always surprised when Nalby makes it far in a clay court tourney. I know that he has had success on the surface...but I'm still surprised nonetheless.

Day 4 - Doha & Bogota
My favorites in Doha and Bogota did not have good days with Sveta losing to Safarova in straights in Doha and Dulko losing to Panova in much the same way.
I want to give an honorable mention to Christina McHale for defeating Shahar Peer in 3 sets and getting to the QFs where she will now face Radwanska. McHale is definitely a player to keep an eye on to see where things go for her.

Updates - Rotterdam & Sao Paulo
San Jose will be in a seperate entry due to the time difference to it and the other two tourney's this week.
Sadly, Gonzo did lose his match against Andreev and, by the looks of it...it wasn't much of a battle. Clay isn't Gonzo's strength but still knowing that this is the last few notes of his swan song...would be great if he went out on a high note.
And Mikhail Youzhny vs Igor Kunitsyn receives the award for most ridiculous scoreline of the day yesterday. Those kind of matches just really aggravate me. Pet peeve I guess one could say.
And then to top that off...Mischa pulled out before his R16 vs Federer because of foot problems.
Still trying to wrap my head around how Mirnyi & Nestor could lose in straights on an Indoor court...

Updates - Doha & Bogota
Apologies for lack of updating. Not enough hours in the day sometimes.
Unfortunately, Hantuchova lost yesterday so there won't be that opportunity for back-to-back titles. Urszula Radwanska also lost and then had to withdraw from her Doubles due to illness. Kirilenko came through only to have to face Kuznetsova in the next round.
In Bogota, Dokic was upset by a Qualifier after the match was suspended for rain. Dokic won the first set 6-4 but, I think, she was down 4-1 in the 2nd when the match resumed.

Finals - Pattaya City
Congratulations to Daniela Hantuchova on defending her title at the Pattaya Open. Wasn't surprised to see the result had her winning the match in 3 sets based on the match history against Kirilenko.
Also a congratulations to Sania Mirza & Anastasia Rodionova for winning the Doubles Title.

Surprises this weekend in Davis Cup
There were definitely a few surprises this weekend but none bigger than Switzerland losing to the U.S.A And not only did Switzerland lose by Saturday...they also lost the two dead rubbers today! Never could have imagined that they would go down 0-5.
Another surprise was seeing Russia go down to Austria. Maybe only a minor surprise though. I figured that if Russia didn't clinch it Friday/Saturday then it would be a hard task for Bogomolov to take out Melzer.
The Japan vs Croatia tie was also a surprise. Thought it would be a shut out but the decision came down to the 5th rubber!
Unfortunately, there was no Raonic vs Tsonga 4th Rubber as Raonic was replaced by Dancevic because of a sore knee.
Here's a run-down of how the ties played out.

SFs - Pattaya City
Was happy to see that Hantuchova made it into the Finals. Accordinding to Chris Skelton (@sharapovanovic), tomorrow will be the first time in Hantuchova's career that she will defend a title. Kirilenko isn't an easy opponent and I don't see this match going any less than the distance.

QFs - Pattaya City
Got so distracted by the whole first day of Davis Cup today that I forgot that I hadn't written about the QFs in Thailand yet today.
Unfortunately, there won't be a Zvonareva vs Hantuchova Final as Zvonareva had to retire in the third set because of her hip. And the run by qualifier Hsieh Su-wei continues with her win over Sania Mirza.

Davis Cup Preview - World Group First Round
I missed the boat on Fed Cup last weekend but with Davis Cup play starting tomorrow...I wanted to throw my 2 cents in. These line ups for the rubbers could change but I'm writing them up as the current information on the DC website.
Spain vs Kazakhstan - Oveido, Spain *Indoor Red Clay*
Spain Captain: Alex Corretja Kazakhstan Captain: Yegor Shaldunov
Juan Carlos Ferrero vs Mikhail Kukushkin
Nicolas Almagro vs Andrey Golubev
Marcel Granollers/Marc Lopez vs Evgeny Korolev/Yuriy Schukin
Nicolas Almagro vs. Mikhail Kukushkin
Juan Carlos Ferrero vs Andrey Golubev
Comment: These two teams have never met. I'm rooting for Spain and I do believe that Spain will win this tie but I'm not confident it will be as easy as it appears to be. I think Kukushkin could prove to be a little trouble for Juanqui.
~~
Austria vs Russia - Wiener Neustadt, Austria *Indoor Hard Court*
Austria Captain: Clemens Trimmel Russia Captain: Shamil Tarpischev
Jurgen Melzer vs Igor Kunitsyn
Andreas Haider-Maurer vs Alex Bogomolov, Jr
Oliver Marach/Alexander Peya vs Nikolay Davydenko/Mikhail Youzhny
Jurgen Melzer vs Alex Bogomolov, Jr
Andreas Hader-Maurer vs Igor Kunitsyn
Comment: Though Russia has a 2-0 edge on Austria...I think this tie could very well go down to the Final Rubber. Though I'm rooting for Russia...slightly relieved that Jurgen and Bogie aren't facing each other till the 4th Rubber.
~~
Canada vs France - Vancouver, Canada *Indoor Hard Court*
Canada Captain: Martin Laurendeau France Captain: Guy Forget
Vasek Pospisil vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Milos Raonic vs Julien Benneteau
Daniel Nestor/Vasek Pospisil vs Julien Benneteau/Michael Llodra
Milos Raonic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Vasek Pospisil vs. Julien Benneteau
Comment: I'm not really sure which country I'm pulling for in this tie. I do know that I hope the fourth Rubber is live. I think a live rubber between Raonic vs Tsonga could be very entertaining!
~~
Switzerland vs USA - Fribourg, Switzerland *Indoor Red Clay*
Switzerland Captain: Severin Luthi USA Captain: Jim Courier
Stanislas Wawrinka vs Mardy Fish
Roger Federer vs John Isner
Roger Federer/Stanislas Wawrinka vs Mike Bryan/Ryan Harrison
Roger Federer vs Mardy Fish
Stanislas Wawrinka vs John Isner
Comment: When I saw the Doubles match-up - point to Switzerland. When I saw the surface - well, the States might as well just get ready for regulation now. Switzerland has this in the bag. Bigger question is will they play France or Canada?
~~
Czech Republic vs Italy - Ostrava, Czech Republic *Indoor Hard Court*
Czech Republic Captain: Jaroslav Navratil Italy Captain: Corrado Barazzutti
Radek Stepanek vs Andreas Seppi
Tomas Berdych vs Simone Bolleli
Frantisek Cermak/Lukas Rosol vs Daniele Bracciali/Potito Starace
Tomas Berdych vs Andreas Seppi
Radek Stepanek vs Simone Bolleli
Comment: This will be the 11th time these two countries have met with Czech Republic ahead by 7-3. I don't think there's too much that Italy can do to prevent #8. Seppi could be difficult but I don't see Bolleli being a problem for Berdych. My heart is rooting for Italy but my mind is saying "not a chance".
~~
Serbia vs Sweden - Nis, Serbia *Indoor Hard Court*
Serbia Captain: Bogdan Obradovic Sweden Captain: Thomas Enqvist
Janko Tipsarevic vs Filip Prpic
Viktor Troicki vs Michael Ryderstadt
Janko Tipsarevic/Nenad Zimonjic vs Johan Brunstrom/Robert Lindstedt
Janko Tipsarevic vs Michael Ryderstedt
Viktor Troicki vs Filip Prpic
Comment: Sweden just doesn't have the firepower that it once had...simple as that. I feel bad for Prpic going up against Tipsy tomorrow. Hope he can win a few games. Completely rooting for Serbia in this tie but just hope its competitive.
~~
Japan vs Croatia - Hyogo, Japan *Indoor Hard Court*
Japan Captain: Elji Takeuchi Croatia Captain: Zeljko Krajan
Go Soeda vs Ivan Dodig
Kei Nishikori vs Ivo Karlovic
Tatsuma Ito/Yuichi Sugita vs Ivo Karlovic/Lovro Zovko
Kei Nishikori vs Ivan Dodig
Go Soeda vs Ivo Karlovic
Comment: Game set Tie Croatia. I can see Nishikori causing problems but the rest of his team just doesn't have enough to back him up. Stranger things have happened in Davis Cup so never know but 3-0.
~~
Germany vs Argentina - Bamberg, Germany *Indoor Red Clay*
Germany Captain: Patrik Kuhnen Argentina Captain: Martin Jaite
Philipp Petzschner vs Juan Monaco
Florian Mayer vs David Nalbandian
Tommy Haas/Philipp Petzschner vs Juan Ignacio Chela/Eduardo Schwank
Florian Mayer vs Juan Monaco
Philipp Petzschner vs David Nalbandian
Comment: Can't both countries win? Last they met was in 2003 where Argentina soundly beat Germany 5-0. It was the Argentine team of Gaudio, Nalbandian, Ker, & Chela. The Argentine team is just as strong today. I don't see a 5-0 in this Tie. The fan in me wants a live 5th rubber of Petzschner vs Nalbandian. The winner of this Tie is likely to take on Croatia so its not going to get any easier.
Spain vs Kazakhstan - Oveido, Spain *Indoor Red Clay*
Spain Captain: Alex Corretja Kazakhstan Captain: Yegor Shaldunov
Juan Carlos Ferrero vs Mikhail Kukushkin
Nicolas Almagro vs Andrey Golubev
Marcel Granollers/Marc Lopez vs Evgeny Korolev/Yuriy Schukin
Nicolas Almagro vs. Mikhail Kukushkin

Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez Announces His Retirement
Woke up to some sad Tennis news this morning to see a twitter from the Roland Garros (@rolandgarros) twitter account that Fernando Gonzalez had announced that he was retiring this year. He has asked for a WC in Miami and that will be the last tournament of his career. Even though he's not exactly a clay-courter...I still wish he could stick it out and wrap it up at RG.
OK...I'm a Gonzo fan. I don't want to see him retire at all but I'm not really all that surprised that he is. If I remember right...he has family in Miami and lives there some times so I hope that Miami does extend him a WC.
He didn't win a Slam but he did reach a career-high ranking of 5 in 2007. With 11 Singles Titles and 3 Doubles Titles (the biggest being the Olympics in 2004) he still leaves a mark that will be remembered. The biggest part of his game was always that go for broke huge forehand. To watch that on TV was one thing...to see it in person was another.
I got to see Gonzo at the Los Angeles tourney a few times. It was entertaining and nerve-wracking at the same time. I think one of the best memories of Gonzo's career for me will always be the Athens Olympics.
Here is the link to the article on the ATP site:

SFs & Finals - Zagreb
After getting to watch the QFs, I was bummed that there were no live feeds of the SFs when I checked. I would have been set if I wanted to watch Montpellier or Fed Cup.
Ideally, I wanted a Baghdatis vs Youzhny Final but after Baghdatis lost to Lacko in two tight sets...I was very happy that it looked to be Youzhny's week. I guess more his week than I originally thought.
Mischa not only won the Singles title but he & Marcos Baghdatis won the Dubs Title which included an easy straight set victory over Jonathan Erlich & Andy Ram. Congratulations to Mikhail Youzhny!
Zagreb *Indoor Hard Court*
Singles - SF

Lukas Lacko def (6)Marcos Baghdatis 7-5 7-6(3)

(3)Mikhail Youzhny def Lukas Lacko 6-2 6-3
Doubles - Final
Marcos Baghdatis/Mikhail Youzhny def (WC)Ivan Dodig/Mate Pavcic 6-2 6-2
Mischa was NOT messing around by the looks of these scorelines. Again...congratulations to Mikhail Youzhny on the Double!!

QFs - Zagreb
I was fortunate enough to find a live feed so that I could watch the Youzhny vs Karlovic QF and the Baghdatis vs Dodig QF.
Zagreb *Indoor Hard Court*
Singles - QF
(3)Mikhail Youzhny def (8)Ivo Karlovic 7-6(10) 3-6 7-6(6)
I missed the entire first set and most of the 2nd set but the 3rd set was a lot of holding serve. The match was fairly routine for what it was. Non-match related but people must have been logging into the site once they got wind of a Final set TB because the feed got choppy which resulted in missing match point completely.
(6)Marcos Baghdatis def (4)Ivan Dodig 6-4 7-5
Baghdatis was serving for the match at 5-4 and went down BP (his first of the match). Managed to save two only for Dodig to break on the 3rd opportunity. But then in the next game Dodig dropped his serve to allow Baghdatis which he served it out fairly easily.
Michael Berrer def (Q)Jurgen Melzer 5-7 6-4 6-4
Saturday OOP
Singles - SFs
Michael Berrer vs (3)Mikhail Youzhny H2H 0-1 ...last meet was '07 in Moscow
(6)Marcos Baghdatis vs Lukas Lacko H2H 0-1 ... last meet was Wimbledon '10 in the 1st round (not much bearing here, in my opinion)
Doubles - SFs
(WC)Ivan Dodig/Mate Pavcic vs Ivo Karlovic/Frank Moser
Marcos Baghdatis/Mikhail Youzhny vs (2)Jonathan Erlich/Andy Ram
Zagreb *Indoor Hard Court*
