And...I missed it...

That pretty much sums up my take on the Men's Final of the 2012 Australian Open. I missed it. I had the TV on but couldn't concentrate on the match due to "real life". Finally, I just turned the TV off at the beginning of the 4th set. One of the best Men's Finals in all of Grand Slam Tennis...and I missed it.

The positive side was that when I woke up I got to scroll through varying twitters of excitement to agony. I had woken up to see that Rafa had lost 5-7 in the 5th and then dozed off again. So I knew how the match was going to end but I still felt the butterflies in my stomach as i scrolled through the twitters. I'm more than pleased that the match went 5 sets. I would expect nothing less from these two.

I hope that one day I can see this match in its entirety (have to set aside 5+ hours) so that I can see what I know all Nadal and Djokovic fans experienced together.

The most memorable of this Australian Open, for me, was Lleyton Hewitt's three matches. His fight, passion, and heart is all still there. I don't think I'll ever forget the ruling against Nalbandian.

The run that Kim Clijsters had to the SF in what might be her last Australian Open was also memorable. It was sad that she didn't get to the Final but more saddened to see the hit that her ranking took down to the 30s (Ranking update entry to come tomorrow).

So that officially closes the book on this AO. And now its on to the weekly grind til we say hello to Roland Garros (my personal favorite Slam).

Lastly, thank you Australian Open for including me amongst a great group of bloggers and allowing me to be one of the AOFANbassadors. Hope to see you in 2013!

What's Next?

After the Australian Open...its back to the weekly grind for a lot of players. Not only do I like to follow the "main" tournaments but also keep my eye on the Challenger circuit. Sadly, I have neglected the Challenger circuit the first month of this season but I will take a look back in a future entry as well as look at the current Challengers.

On the ATP calendar for this next week is Zagreb (Indoor Hard Court), Vina Del Mar (Clay), and Montpellier (Indoor Hard Court).

Sometimes I enjoy the week to week more than I do the Slams.

Been slacking on my AOFANbassador Duties

As the title says, I know I've been slacking on my duties the last couple days. My views & opinions of the Nadal vs Federer SF were pretty much based on twitters. I watched through the 3rd set I think it was and then turned in. Needless to say, I was very happy to see that Rafa took it in 4. I know that I missed a good match just as I had when I missed Djokovic vs. Hewitt but staying awake was just not on my side.

When it comes to Clijsters match...I missed a lot of that too. I just remember thinking the match was like a see-saw. More so than her match against Na.

The team of Daniel Nestor/Max Mirnyi were taken out so I have no Dubs team to root for.

My last interest in the 2012 Australian Open lies with Rafa Nadal and the final against Djokovic. I hope that its yet another match that represents the beauty of the sport. Though I'm 100% for Nadal...I can't help but hope for 5 sets. A fitting way to end this chapter, I think.

I end this with a loud & proud: VAMOS RAFA!!!!!

Australian Open - David Ferrer, Kim Clijsters, and Rafael Nadal

Even though David Ferrer was defeated in straight sets last night...it was probably one of my favorite matches to watch for the competition alone. I didn't see the third set but sadly it looks like Djokovic raised his game even more and quite possibly broke Ferrer's serve along with his will.

The first set showed why these two went into this QF with a 6-5 record (Djokovic with the edge). They were matching each other shot for shot...it was almost ridiculous. And the angles that these guys were coming up with!

I wish that Ferrer had been able to push Djokovic to 5 sets but even in 3 sets...he still made him a little nervous. With no Ferrer...I'm hoping for a Nadal vs Murray Final so maybe Ferrer wore down Djokovic just enough.

Max Mirnyi/Daniel Nestor were taken to 3 sets in their QF by Santiago Gonzalez/Christopher Kas but thankfully came through 6-1 6-7(4) 6-2 to get into the SFs and face the unseeded team of Leander Paes/Radek Stepanek today on MCA.

I'm looking forward to two Singles matches today.

(11)Kim Clijsters vs (3)Victoria Azarenka

(3)Roger Federer vs (2)Rafael Nadal

The men's match is, not surprisingly, a night match. I'm hoping to stay up for the whole match and see Nadal in victory.

Nothing but Highlights

There wasn't a downside to the Australian Open yesterday on Day 9. All went according to plan. Kim Clijsters won her QF and Rafael Nadal won his QF. I wasn't all that interested in Del Potro vs Federer but I was surprised at how seemingly easy Federer took care of his opponent.

I expected such a tight match that I expected Del Potro to take the match in four sets. Not so much. Next is the SF that the fans and especially the tournament was hoping for (2)Rafael Nadal vs (3)Roger Federer. I'll write more about that later.

As for Kim Clijsters, I had faith that she would win but I thought Wozniacki might push Clijsters to a 3rd set. I'm glad that didn't happen.

Unfortunately the time difference worked against me in the Nadal vs Berdych match. I stayed up til it was 1 set ALL and then went to bed. Which then I woke up a short time later to check the mobile app to see that Berdych was serving at 0-40, 3-5. I twittered that but then apparently fell back to sleep before the Final result.

My favorite thing this morning was scrolling through twitters as the match played out and everybody on my timeline was for Rafa. I didn't get to watch the match but it was the next best thing.

As for today, there's only one match (well...two if I count the Men's Doubles) that I'm really interested in and AGAIN it's the night match which is after midnight in my neck of the woods.

I really do believe that Ferrer can do what so few have done lately and that's to beat Djokovic. It won't be easy and it won't be in straights but no doubt that he CAN do it.

As a side note the #2 team of Max Mirnyi/Daniel Nestor are in the QFs and are facing the #12 team of Christopher Kas/Santiago Gonzalez.

Australian Open - Day 8 Hits & Misses

I gave my views on the Lleyton Hewitt vs Novak Djokovic match in a previous post but here are the results and views of other matches that I followed.

I expected Ferrer to get a tougher test from Gasquet but it was really no test at all. Gasquet could've been a practice partner for all the challenge he was to Ferrer.

I'm not comfortable labelling Hewitt's loss to Djokovic as a "miss". He may have lost but it was a win for Tennis.

Hits:

(5)David Ferrer def (17)Richard Gasquet 6-4 6-4 6-1

Tuesday Schedule:

(1)Caroline Wozniacki vs (11)Kim Clijsters (RLA)
(7)Tomas Berdych vs (2)Rafael Nadal (RLA) **night match

Lleyton Hewitt Makes Tennis Proud

Normally, I would be writing about the hits & misses of the day but to call Lleyton Hewitt's loss to Novak Djokovic a "miss" wouldn't be correct. He lost in 4 sets but every Twitter I read reflected a match that was played with heart and determination. Sadly, I didn't see the match for myself. Being in the States...I just couldn't stay up any longer.

When I woke to see that Lleyton had won the 4th set and then scrolling through twitters and reading a piece in the NY Times Tennis blog/section...I knew that I had missed one heck of a tennis match. I wouldn't label it epic but if this is truly Hewitt's last Australian Open....I hope that he is holding his head high.

One of the best things I read came from a twitter by Jurgen Melzer (@jojomelzer):
Is there a bigger fighter out there than lleighton?

I don't know that professional Tennis will have another player like Lleyton Hewitt. He definitely left it all out there.

If you want to know what Tennis is all about...he is one of the players that I would point to everytime.

Well done, Lleyton Hewitt!

Life Lessons from Tomas Berdych

Almost a day later, the debate is still going on about how Tomas Berdych acted at the net at the end of his match vs Nicolas Almagro. He won the match in four sets...the last three being in tiebreaks and one of those sets lasting an hour and 4 minutes! ESPN2 only showed bits & pieces choosing to spend most of their coverage on the Kim Clijsters vs Li Na match.

But what I did see of the match it appeared to be a good one. Mel (@GrandSlamGal ... http://www.grandslamgal.com/) put it best in a twitter saying that the "whole thing has tainted what was actually a really enjoyable match to watch".

I don't think what Berdych was right and he should have waited to state his issue with what he feels Almagro did was wrong after they both left the court. However, I also feel the backlash and the name-calling that he is receiving is over the top.

What do I take from this? Regardless of how you feel about a person or how you feel they wronged you...don't let that ruin an accomplishment or a victory. Don't be vengeful or angry in victory. Berdych won. He was better than Almagro when it counted. That should have been statement enough.

Shaking of a hand is just courteous and acknowledging your opponent. Even if Berdych had lost and Almagro's shot would've been the cause...I would still say to shake his hand. In this situation and this place...the display would have said alot about Berdych's character. And it has.

The crowd tomorrow surely will not let Berdych forget this as he faces Rafa tomorrow. Should be interesting.

Australian Open - Day 7 Hits & Misses

The match of the day, by far, was Kim Clijsters vs Li Na. I missed a good portion of the first set but caught a replay on ESPN2 just in time to see Clijsters roll her ankle and I had to wince. Was she going to finish out or was she going to call it?

The second set was touch & go and then it seemed like a foregone conclusion that an injury was going to be how Clijsters's last AO would be remembered. Then something happened. A let-down by Li Na and Clijsters raising her game. The match is in a tiebreak...again its in Li Na's hands. She has 4 match points...and then she doesn't. And then Clijsters has a set point and that was the only one she needed.

Thr third set began as all Clijsters up 4-0 with La Na's game falling apart and Clijsters keeping her foot on the gas. This wasn't the prettiest of Tennis. Clijsters was up two breaks at 5-2 and Li Na breaks and is able to get to 5-4. Could only hope that Clijsters could hold serve and get it done. And that she did.

As I said, it wasn't the prettiest of Tennis matches but it was one of the best of this Aud Open for all its tension, drama, & suspense.

Australian Open - Day 6 Hits & Misses

The match of the day was the match that I couldn't stay awake for. When I went to bed, Lleyton Hewitt was down a set to Milos Raonic. I was woken up by a noise at 4:30 in the morning and checked my twitter feed to see that the Australian Open had just twittered that Hewitt won in 4 sets. I was so excited for him! He is having a great run! I would love to believe that he can go further but his next opponent is Djokovic. This guy is practically unbeatable. Never mind that I think he's only lost a total of 10 games in the tournament so far? I have no doubt that Lleyton will give it all he has...maybe even take a set off of him but not so sure that an upset is realistic.

I was disappointed in how Tipsarevic's match went. He was playing Gasquet who is better than his seeding of 17. I just didn't expect that Gasquet would dominate and outplay Tipsy the way he did.If there is any brightside it's that I won't have to watch a Tipsarevic vs. Ferrer Round of 16...

Speaking of Ferrer...after being down 0-4 in the first set, he comes back to win it and then just steam rolls over Chela. Maybe Ferrer just wanted to instill false hope in Chela.

Australian Open - Day 5 Hits & Misses

Probably the biggest "miss" wasn't a match but in reading the news that David Nalbandian got fined $8000. OK...so throwing water at/on a staff person isn't the most mature but $8000 seems a little steep and what punishment did the umpire receive? Considering he was umpiring a match the next day...

Was hoping for a tighter match between Clijsters and Hantuchova but Clijsters was just too damn good.

Australian Open - Day 4 Hits & Misses

I'm not a big fan of Andy Roddick by any means but I still felt for him in how last night's match played out. Nobody wants to go out that way. I hope that the hamstring doesn't take long to heal and affect too much of his season.

That said, I am happy for Lleyton Hewitt that he came through. Some of the angles that he was hitting reminded me of the "old days". Had Roddick been 100%...I think the match would have measured up to every bit of the hype and then some.

Most surprising to me was the Sweeting vs Ferrer match. Being a fan of both...I was hoping that Sweeting would test Ferrer but 5 sets wasn't what I was expecting.

Of the few games of Sloane Stephens match against Svetlana Kuznetsova that ESPN showed...I was reminded why I've been a fan of Stephens since I saw that match on TV at the US Open. She's a fighter and her ranking is only going to climb higher.

Australian Open - Day 3 Hits & Misses

I don't know if I can even call David Nalbandian's loss a "miss". He got screwed plain & simple. If you saw the match, you know what I'm talking about and if you haven't seen it you have probably read about it by now. Isner hit a serve...the middle lineswoman called it wide...then the umpire overrules and then tells Nalbandian that he couldn't challenge. It was a horrible call by the umpire!

Would Nalbandian have won the match without that call? I don't know but I think he would have considering the point at which this happened. Watching this happen to him brought back memories of a US Open SF that he played against Roddick. This was years before the replay/challenge system was implemented. And the debate at Mens Tennis Forums (MTF) went on for days. There will be no debate in this one.

Australian Open - Day 2 Hits & Misses

My biggest happiness this morning when checking overnight results was to see that Hewitt came through in 4...lying there in bed and seeing that he lost the 3rd set, I was concerned.

The biggest disappointment was seeing that after Ferrero was up 2 sets against Troicki he wound up losing in 5. I can only wonder if Troicki just started playing out of his mind. Other disappointment was Youzhny losing in 5.

The tiebreak that I wish I could have seen goes to the match of Tipsarevic vs. Tursunov and Tipsy taking the TB 14-12.

Australian Open - Hits & Misses on Day 1

Some surprises. Some not so much. There were a lot more 5-setters on the first day than I would expect. I was very glad to see Olivier Rochus just bulldozed through Bjorn Phau. Thought it was ridiculous that he had to play Monday as it was. After the week that he had in Auckland and then playing a best of 5 on Monday. Thankfully what happened to Nieminen didn't happen to him.

I was a little worried how Baghdatis would do not knowing what form Becker was in. Had nothing to worry about.

Tennis - Commentary & Rankings for 1/16/12

I'm not going to list the rankings of every single player in the top 100. Selfishly...just my personal favorites. Sort of like for posterity when it comes to the end of the season and I can look by way of my entries how things progressed. I missed the first week but I will try to consistently post.

Along with my favorites, I'm also keeping an eye on Benoit Paire. He announced his presence in Auckland this past week for sure.

Noticeably absent will be any mention of Alex Bogomolov, Jr. If you know me, you know that I am a big fan of his....or was. I still think he's a great player and wish him all the best on the year but after a twitter exchange...I no longer stand "in his corner".
